A mobile game to promote the 2022 Women's Volleyball World Championship
Volley Runner
How do you reach new fans? In the Netherlands, even when it comes to world championships, it's a challenge to generate as much attention for other sports events as football. For the 2022 Women's Volleyball World Championship, we, along with the Dutch Volleyball Federation, the municipality of Rotterdam, the province of Gelderland, and Techonomy, came up with a creative solution: Volley Runner.
Volley Runner was a mobile game where players ran through various recognizable cities, collected volleyballs, and completed exciting challenges to achieve the highest score on the leaderboards. There were also multiple prizes to be won. The game served as an interactive and engaging way to promote the 2022 Women's Volleyball World Championship.

Volley Runner in brief
Hulan has a passion for creating inspiring, engaging, and effective game and learning experiences. We combine serious games, gamification principles, advanced technologies, and other innovative approaches such as virtual and augmented reality to elevate learning and development to a higher level. In collaboration with Nevobo and utilizing the core points below, we were able to realize the Volley Runner.
Connecting Worldwide
Players from all over the world played Volley Runner, and of course, they wanted to play in the uniform of their own country. Volley Runner offered you the choice to outfit your avatar with the uniform of one of the 24 participating countries. This way, every team was represented, making fans from all over the world feel connected.
Local Recognition
Each level in Volley Runner represented one of the host cities. Hulan created all the levels and aimed to capture the recognizable elements of a city as accurately as possible. For example, players could spot the Euromast in the Rotterdam level. Recognizable elements not only increased the enjoyment but also served as unique city marketing.
Fan Engagement
Volley Runner was part of an extensive marketing campaign surrounding the 2022 Women's Volleyball World Championship. After its launch in the Markthal in Rotterdam, there were daily opportunities to win prizes. Players were introduced to the sport and the World Championship in a completely different way. Through this dynamic and interactive approach, thousands of people were introduced to the world championship.
